Devil car

The Remarkable Replacement




Lan turned out to be a very fast learner, a fearless experimenter, and a stickler to the story’s panel “guides” (instructions of the writer on what the artist should draw per scene or frame). We hit it off immediately as a team. Devil Car became even more popular obviously because of his inspired and innovative artistic presentations. And, by the time we finished the novel at chapter 150 from the 79th issue he picked it up from, he had become one of the most sought-after serial illustrators in the business. Lan and I did several other all GASI hit novels, among them ‘The Yum-Yum” in 1986 also in Holiday Komiks, “Twilight People” likewise in ’86 in Pinoy Komiks, then the reprise “Devil Car, The Return” again in Holiday in ’88, “Zortija” in 1990 in Thunder Komiks, and finally ‘House of Horror” in the mid-90’s in Aliwan Komiks. “Devil Car, the Return” like its predecessor, also became a certified hit though no longer as lengthy—this time I ran it for only an even 70 chapters.

As for Lan Medina, there was no looking back, from that eventful day I gave him his first real break. He just kept going at it, and not even the death of the local comics industry has stopped him from continuously doing the work he loves and knows best. To this day he still keeps dishing out those superb illustrations of his; the only difference is that he now does it for DC Comics and other dollar-earning U.S. comics publications. And by the way, not so very long ago Lan even won the “Will Eisner Award” a prize of recognition they give away in the States to the most outstanding comics illustrators—worldwide. Not bad for a kid who started out in the business merely as a replacement

Beginner's Luck




…which was the lucky day for a certain very young, very talented, but still very inexperienced artist. ‘Vic”, Cescil Torres, another GASI “youngblood” staffer and newly appointed editor of their most prestigious comics-magazine Aliwan Komiks, said to me “How would you like to take a chance on this new artist we’re trying to develop? His name is LAN MEDINA and though he’s still a beginner, he’s an exceptional one. He’s really very good and I think his style will be perfect for your Devil Car.”

“Hmm” I replied, not having really seen any of Lan’s drawings yet at that time, “you must have a lot of faith indeed on this kid for you to recommend him so fearlessly in such a major project.”

“Its not just me,” Cescil explained. ‘Ollie and Mrs. Paguio are both very much impressed with this newcomer’s work. I’m the one who sort of “discovered” Lan first and that’s why I’m playing advocate in his behalf. But Ollie says he’ll approve of Lan’s teaming up with you should you agree to try him, and Mrs. Paguio in fact encourages the idea. But then of course, this is just if you still don’t have any other replacement in mind yet for Carl.”

Cescil then showed me some of Lan’s short story illustrations and they were indeed outstanding work for a newcomer. Novice or not, he sure looked ready to take on a novel already. I consented, on the spot, to try him as my new teammate for Devil Car. Cescil was delighted. A thing like that was unheard of; no top rate comics novelist risked putting his weekly serial in the hands of just any artist, let alone a still untested and virtually unknown one. In my case though, I thought I could afford to take that gamble: First, one look at Lan’s work and as I said, I immediately saw that he indeed had a lot of potential; Second, I thought that if he was good enough for Ollie and Mrs. Paguio, then he was good enough for me; and lastly, let me tell you that in that little world of ours, as in every other area in life, playing a bit of POLITICS was unavoidable if you were smart and wanted to get ahead. Well, I shrewdly foresaw that Cescil was going to be an important player in the GASI editorial hierarchy in the days to come, and it wouldn’t hurt to get in her good graces early in the game, would it? So I thought I was doing her a favor by acceeding to her suggestion. In the end though, I realized that it wasn’t Cescil—but actually myself and Devil Car--- whom I had done a favor by acquiring the services of Lan.

Revving Up for the Run





There were a few writer’s tricks up my sleeve which I applied to Devil Car and earned me some pretty gratifying results. It had always been my contention that for a comics novel to click, it just had to grab the readers by their throats at the earliest possible time, perhaps not any more later than its 20th issue. The writer achieved this by immediately pouring everything he’s got, every initial power-ideas he has thought of for his novel, into those first, second and third chapters and not get worried about not having anything juicy left for later (some colleagues I knew were so short of ideas that they tended to stingily hold on as long as they could to their miserably few bright ones for fear of being unable to produce any more for later). My reasoning is that once you’ve caught the reader’s attention early on, he will still continue following your novel even if it waned a bit in intensity later on, as long as your writing didn’t turn lousy, and provided too that you could still surprise the reader with even just sporadic flashes of brilliance. But if your weekly story installments continually failed to show any signs of life after having already wasted the reader’s time and money for five whole months, then forget it-—no amount of flooding your remaining chapters with even the faintest of your concerved ideas would entice the reader to still take a belated look.

Another wily trick I did which I became happy about was deciding beforehand never to show the readers the interior of Devil Car, thus keeping them greatly intrigued and perpetually guessing as to what the devil must really be the contents of the damned auto. (Although in the sequel, Devil Car, the Return, which I was requested to do in 1988 again in Holiday Komiks, I could no longer avoid exposing completely the innards of the murderous machine in the closing chapters.

But let me share with you the greatest trick of all in making serialized comics novelas (and this can also well apply to the “telenovelas” that now seem to have taken over as the “masa’s” most favorite form of inexpensive entertainment since the comics serials became extinct). If you ask me, the real secret in being able to continually sell a serialized story lies in its most crucial point: in the “To be Continued” last frame of every chapter. The writer shold always keep in mind to try and end each episode with a scene wherein the reader will be asking himself: “What will happen next?” In Devil Car, I always tried to squeeze in a cliff-hanger of an ending whenever possible, in every issue. You always had to keep the readers guessing as to what is in store for them in the next chapter.

The Car Keys




I’m often asked: “So what was the key to Devil Car’s success?” Well, simply put, I just tried to plan the scenes well for every chapter. I dug deep in my arsenal to try and come up with new and exciting gimmicks every time. The Devil Car’s supernatural abilities were supposedly limitless, so the real challenge lay in trying to invent different and unheard of evil powers for that diabolical machine. At the same time, it also had to have a few chinks in its armor, and devising those chinks kept me up nights into the wee hours of the morning. Thinking up innovative ways and means for the “bidas” of the story to use those chinks and stop an unstoppable villain even momentarily every other chapter or so was also taxing. And then there were those countless attacks of the Devil Car on its victims and confrontations with its pursuers—I had to make the circumstances in said encounters different each time lest the scenes repeat themselves, become predictable and monotonous.

DC's Track Record

Well, Devil Car, after having come out at only about its 10th issue, amazingly jumped up to a slot within the TOP TEN (I just don’t remember anymore to what number exactly) GASI-ATLAS bestselling comics novels. And as if that wasn’t phenomenal enough, it very shortly asserted full dominance over the lot by yet again shooting up, finally, to the Number One Spot! Once it got there, Devil Car steadfastly held hits ground, refusing to budge and remaining glued to that coveted position for an incredibly long time. It ultimately had to give way to some other novel of course, but it never dropped below the top 15 mark. In fact it was still somewhere high up that rating ladder, when I decided to already end it on its 150th issue. I didn’t have to end it yet. Since the advent of Devil Car in Holiday Komiks, the records showed a significant rise in the magazine’s circulation, so Ollie and Mrs. Paguio wanted me to go on writing it. But I felt that the novel had reached its zenith after having already run for more than three years. Just between you and me though, I just plain got tired of racking my brains out creating Devil Car scenes that would outshine the last. It was time to move on to other novels, other challenges…

Monserrate ... orientalist "follie"... in Sintra's "Glorious Eden"

The designer of this suggestive little romantic palace was James Knowles Jr. and it was built in 1858 on the initiative of Francis Cook, Viscount Monserrate, being one of the most interesting examples of Sintra Romanticism. A work in the Romantic-Orientalist spirit, with its great circular tower, bulbous cupolas and exotic decoration, the building recalls in particular the famous Brighton Pavilion of Nash, and English Romantic architecture.However, as José Augusto França says, "Monserrate has a somewhat different scenographic sense, based on a greater wealth of archaeological details", constituted by its inspirational roots which - via English sources - are grafted on to the Moghul architecture. It was founded in the18th century by Gerard De Visme, a wealthy and cultured merchant, who had made hisfortune from trade with Brazil. The house was briefly occupied by William Beckfordand quickly fell into ruin, an event cruelly recorded by the poet Lord Byron :“Here didst thou dwell, here schemes of pleasure plan,Beneath yon mountain's ever-beauteous brow ;But now, as if a thing unblest by man,Thy fairy dwelling is as lone as thou!Here giant weeds a passage scarce allowTo halls deserted, portals gaping wide,Fresh lessons to the thinking bosom, howVain are the pleasaunces on earth supplied;Swept into wrecks anon by Time's ungentle tide."Lord Byron came to Sintra in July 1809. He placed Monserrate firmly on the touristmap. His moralizing rhymes described the wrecked house and garden as a directconsequence of the wanton lifestyle of its former resident. Henceforth all Englishvisitors to Lisbon would make the pilgrimage to Sintra to see the famous beauty spot.Countless travelogues, written by well-to-do trippers and military men stationed inPortugal after the Napoleonic wars, describe the slow demise of the once luxuriousproperty.In 1841, one such tourist became so enchanted with the property that he resolved to buyit, no easy task in a country still bound by aristocratic laws of entailment. Francis Cook,returning from a Grand Tour of Southern Europe and the Middle East, had landed inLisbon, fallen in love with the daughter of a wealthy merchant, and according to familytradition, discovered Monserrate whilst honeymooning in Sintra. Cook was the son ofWilliam Cook, wholesale draper, and heir to a fortune of over two million pounds.From the outset, he clearly understood the enormous potential of Monserrate as alandscape garden. Although unable to purchase the estate until 1856, he began planningthe grounds as early as 1852, presumably under some sort of leasing arrangement. Theoldest exotic tree in the garden was planted at this time: Araucaria heterophylla.Building works to restore the house were directed by James T. Knowles, FRIBA, andcompleted in 1860. The gardens were laid out at the same time according to Cook’s owninstruction. It is said that over 2000 men were employed on the enterprise.Both house and garden are minutely described in a 300 page epic of rhyming coupletsentitled Fairy Life in Fairyland, written by Dr. Thomas Cargill. An amateur botanist,Cargill had quite an influence on the early development of the garden. He was widelytravelled, and the poem displays his knowledge of Australian and South African flora.The Cook family remained at Monserrate for four generations, however the estate wasfinally sold in the 1940’s, first to a speculator and then passed to the Portuguese State.The once magnificent gardens slowly declined until following the 1974 revolution theybecame once more, virtually abandoned.The Friends of Monserrate were founded in 1992 as an independent volunteerorganisation devoted to the promotion and restoration of the estate. In 1995 Monserratewas inscribed, along with the cultural landscape of Sintra, as part of the UNESCO listof World Heritage. In 2000 the Portuguese government established the Parques deSintra, a public company devoted to the restoration and management of cultural heritagein Sintra, which since that time has run Monserrate gardens and undertaken a series ofrestoration projects for the house and garden.The Rose Garden: history and recent works“Rounding this blaze of glory ressurect,Tread we our lower Lawn, soft carpet green,“With Juniper and Cypress all bedecked,And Rose, and Rhododendron rich between,“And fair Camellia ; - now a landscape scene“Romantic, openeth to our gaze : the Lawns“Do seem to join continuous, and there dawns“Sudden the Fairy Palace on our sight”Recent works at Monserrate have restored much of the spatial quality of the gardensthat surround the palace. In modern memory the house has perched precariously at thetop of a steep corridor of lawn: seemingly somewhat overbalanced and awkward. Thelawns that now join continuous from below the music-room-tower to the Great Lawn,sweep down through the newly cleared rose garden to provide an ample setting for thebuilding. Once again the Palace is allowed to sit comfortably on the hilltop.The history of the rose garden is not as well known as other parts of Monserrate, but itis clear that the garden existed from the earliest interventions of Francis Cook. Thereare sporadic references to the Rose Garden in garden descriptions right up to 1929, thefinal flowering of Monserrate, long before the slow decline that has brought it to ourdays.The rose is a flower full of symbolic value, flower of love, flower of the English nation,but for Cook the rose was the Queen of Flowers, and represented all that the gardens ofthe Orient could bring to his exotic creation:“And flowery land of ‘Old Cathay’“Reach we oft by break of day,“And anon its sweets inhale,“Borne on the musk-opressèd gale,“And catch the spicy airs that fan“The languid shores of fair Japan,“Then in a sea-shell’s depth we lie,“Skimming the azure floods, and hie“To Indus’ banks, or Ganges shores,“Where brindled tiger sullen roars :“Nor pause we long ; and lo! appear“Our own loved gardens of Cashmere,“Where I my fresh musk-roses twine,“Fresh fragrant and divine!”Clearly this was no ordinary rose garden. Heavy with fragrance and redolent of the FarEast, the roses of Cook’s garden were as charged with mystery as the alabaster screensof his palace or the tiger-skin rugs spread in its halls. The roses and little box hedges ofthe Petit Trianon and Marie Antoinette had no place in this garden, Cook sought torecreate an atmosphere he had known as a young man through powerful floralassociation:“Mine are the gorgeous climes as erst,“Where my frolic youth was nurst,“Eastern climes where bending glows,“The crimson of the blushing rose.”By the second half of the nineteenth century the plant explorers and rose breeders hadtogether radically altered the range of roses available to wealthy landowners in search ofnovelty. Many of these roses had been produced by hybridising species obtained inChina and India and were cultivated with enormous care in the great glasshouses of theera. Monserrate offered a unique opportunity to cultivate these new wonders in theopen air. A new type of rose garden was needed. The site was chosen carefully: the soil,a perfect loamy clay, lying within a warm sheltered valley between ancient Cork Treesand newly planted pines.“But, Fairies all! beholdAgain that field of flowers,“Pink, damask, white and gold ;”A field of flowers: traces of flowerbeds cut into the lawn can be discerned even today.Clearing work carried out before works began was conducted in such a manner so as notto destroy any of this evidence. A detailed topographic survey was conducted. Itappears that these beds were cut into the grass and were connected to a network ofearthenware pipes that supplied water to the Great Lawn above. Long sweeping walksdivided the sloping beds. Aside from constructions related to the water system, no otherbuilt structures have come to light.The works to date have brought a considerable area of long-abandoned rose garden backunder firm control. The clearance of 3 – 4 metre high brambles that had replaced theroses is somewhat ironic since the genus Rubus to which they belong is closely relatedto the rose. Francis Burt, Monserrate’s first Master Gardener described hownightingales lived in the dense shrubberies of the garden. Any temporary loss of habitatfrom this clearance will soon be recovered once the great rose-beds are re-established.Surviving roses amongst the brambles have been carefully marked and preserved. Onehas been identified as ‘Cloth of Gold’ – referred to in Monserrate literature as‘Chromatella’.During 2008/2009 the first 125 rose bushes were planted: Chinas, Teas and Noisettesimported from Peter Beales, UK. They have successfully passed the exceptionally longhot summer of 2009, cared for by the gardeners of Parques de Sintra. It is hoped thatduring the forth-coming planting season another 500 rose bushes will be planted. Theseare to be obtained from specialist European rose growers such as John Hook and PaolaLungaroni.In addition to the historic rose cultivars grown in the new garden it is hoped that thegarden will come to showcase the hybrids of Rosa gigantea, first hybridised by HenriCayeux in 1906 at the Botanic Garden of Lisbon. The celebrated Belle de Portugal isthe most famous example. The modern gigantea hybrids of Indian rosarian, ViruViraragavan, will also be planted as an example of the continuation of the contributionthat the genes of this gigantic species have made to rose breeding.It is important to relate the history of the area surrounding the rose garden. More thanhalf of the garden of Monserrate is missing. The recently replanted Mexico and theRose Garden are intimately linked by a ridge top path with panoramic views of thesurrounding landscape.
